PlayStation VR2 lives up to all expectations

In November 2022, after long teasing, Sony finally announced the launch date of the new PS VR2 headset: February 22, 2023. It was already known then that the new virtual reality glasses would have a hefty price tag (600 euros). This makes it more expensive than the device you use it on: the PlayStation 5. But if you’re ready to rediscover the world of VR, the new PS VR 2 is the device to go for.

We have already been able to try out the new VR2 headset. First conclusion: this has little to do with virtual reality as we experienced it in 2016 around the launch of the first Playstation VR. The new headset is easy to adjust and simple to put on. The OLED screen is a really big improvement. And the new Sense controllers are also very nice to use. Installation is easy to complete. This set has everything you need to enjoy VR. Whether you do that in an action game like Horizon Call of the Mountain, or quietly paddling between the Norwegian Fjords in Kayak VR: Mirage.

After installation, first install some games.

PS VR 2 setup

You will first have to tap 600 euros before you can immerse yourself in the new world of VR with the PS VR2. But once you have purchased it, the fun of unboxing begins. And that is actually done. The VR headset with cable, to connect to your PS 5. Two new Sense controllers, two earphones and a short manual. Tip, after unboxing, immediately swing both controllers to the charger. Chances are they’re low on battery, which saves you from having to sit and wait after installation if you want to get started.

For the installation, which really speaks for itself, it is important to consider whether you are going to work with the PS VR2 while sitting, standing or really moving. In the case of the latter, you want to create enough free space, for example by moving the coffee table. The glasses have a camera on the front, so you can see through the glasses, as it were. That way you also set your playing space.

If you quickly suffer from motion sickness, it is advisable to start playing while sitting. You can also set how you want to move through the game for each game.

During the setup you look through the glasses.

PS VR 2 review

And then… you can finally get started. There is already a nice range of launch titles. So there is something available for everyone. The headset is very easy to adjust with the band on the back of your head, and the part with the OLED screen. Made for several hours of fun (one after the other) without getting annoying. The new controllers fit well in the hand, and the buttons are all in a logical place. Although that certainly takes some getting used to in the beginning, after those many hours with the regular dualsense cotroller.

And then the image, which is of course the main thing. No longer grainy or delayed, no, the OLED screen is really a big step forward. And that also ensures that the step from the HR or 4K images that you are used to from your PS5 to the PS VR2 is a lot smaller.

Immersive

This new generation of VR is of course also accompanied by the necessary innovations. One of the big improvements is eye tracking. This way you can be even more immersed in the game world, because the glasses better understand what you want. And then there is also haptic feedback, in both the headset and the controllers. This in combination with the better screen and the possibility of 3D audio gives you the feeling that you are in the middle of the action even more. Terrifying when you play a horror game, but wonderful and fantastic when you enter a fantasy world.

It is certain that you and your friends, family or colleagues will enjoy this. On the screen where you normally play your PS5 games, you can also see what you see through your headset at that moment. And that has everything to do with the fact that Sony has also thought of all streamers. You can easily live stream your gameplay with the VR Headset.

As we write at the beginning of the article, this has little to do with the PS VR from 2016. The world may not have been ready to really dive into the world of Virtual Reality back then. With this new set from Sony, we certainly are!

Plenty of action instead of lying on the couch with a controller in your hand.

Kayak VR: Mirage

A completely different game, especially for those who are not yet familiar with VR. As the title suggests, you can go paddling.
