Fast food chain McDonald’s announced that it will post calorie information on all its menus starting Monday.
“We want to do this voluntarily,” said Jan Fields, president of McDonald’s USA.
“We believe this will help educate consumers,” Fields added
According to CBS News, the move by the world’s largest burger chain Cloud puts pressure on other major restaurants to post information next to all their dishes.
The decision to post calorie information follows a US court decision to uphold President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul, which includes a regulation that would require restaurant chains with more than 20 locations to post calorie information.
Posting calorie information isn’t a ‘magic bullet’ to fight obesity, but it can have a big impact over time, experts say.
“Obesity is not something where you wake up one day and you’re fat”. We gain weight slowly and gradually over time,” says Margo Wutan, director of nutrition at the Center for Science in the Public Interest.
