Schools are poor in digital education, with scores of 180 districts less than 10%

As India enters the epidemic year, students in about 61 percent of the country’s districts had very little exposure to digital learning due to limited availability of computers, internet facilities and trained teachers to operate technical equipment in schools, a report from the Ministry of Education said. Released on Monday.

The Performance Grading Index for Districts for 2019-20 (PGI-D) shows that schools across India have performed poorly in the digital education segment, scoring the lowest compared to other parameters considered when compiling the index.

In the index, 180 districts scored less than 10 percent in digital learning, 146 districts scored 11 to 20 percent, while 125 districts scored between 21 and 30 percent.

The report also clarifies the rural-urban divide in the field of digital education. For example, while city districts like Chandigarh and Delhi scored between 25 and 35 out of 50, places like Araria and Kishanganj in Bihar scored less than 2.

Backward districts like South Salmara-Mankachar in Assam and Dhalai in Tripura scored 1. District-wise performance on digital education was created based on computer / laptop, internet facilities, student-to-computer ratio and percentage of trained teachers. Using and teaching through computer.

In contrast, in terms of learning outcomes, no district scored below 10 percent, 12 scored between 11 and 20 percent, while 309 scored between 51 and 60 percent.

The Center released the state-based PGI index for 2019-20 in June 2021. The states of Chandigarh and Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Kerala were the best performers in the index.

“The Covid-19 epidemic highlights the changes necessary to our existing system for adopting digital learning as part of mainstream education to continue education at home … This required a domain on digital education in PGI-D, which is not in the state’s PGI. .

“Under the Department of Digital Learning, 20 districts showed a 20 percent improvement in scores and 43 districts showed a 10 percent improvement in scores in 2019-20 compared to 2018-19, resulting in grade-level progress,” states the PGI-D report.
